Greenville (Texas) Morning Herald, Sat, 9 Apr 1938, page 1, John L. Waddle Passes Away, PROMINENT RESIDENT OF JACOBIA COMMUNITY DIES FRIDAY NIGHT

John Lafayette Waddle, 79, prominent resident of the Jacobia community for more than 60 years, died suddenly at 7:45 o'clock Friday night at his family home.

Mr. Waddle was born on December 14, 1858 in Cusseta, County (sic), Georgia, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wesley Waddle, early settlers of the Jacobia community. He came to Texas with his parents in 1877 and had since made his home in the same community, north of Greenville. He was one of Hunt County's most prominent citizens and long been active in the affairs of his community, county, state and nation. He was a staunch Democrat and for a number of years served his party as chairman of the Jacobia precinct.

Having been reared on the farm, Mr. Waddle followed farm- (Continue to Page 3) ing as a profession and was considered one of the most progressive and successful farmers of this section of the state.

Early in life Mr. Waddle professed Christian faith and joined the Methodist Church, remaining a true Christian until his death. He was among the earlier members of the Jones-Bethel Methodist Church and contributed much toward the advancement of Christianity in the community in which he lived. He was also an active member of the Hervey Bible Class of Kavanaugh Methodist Church in this city for a number of years.

Mr. Waddle was married to Miss Helen Rebecca Dodson on December 16, 1891 and she preceded him in death on December 23, 1910.

He is survived by seven children, W.D. Waddle, R.C. Waddle, and H.C. Waddle, all of Jacobia; Mrs. Hyatt Cheek, of Greenville; Mrs. E.E. Davis, of Dallas; T.G. Waddle, of Greenville, and Mrs. Thurman Haun, of Jacobia; one sister, Mrs. W.S. Gaither, of Greenville; and four brothers, Dr. D.R. Waddle, Greenville; R.S. Waddle, of Lone Oak; H.A. Waddle, of Houston; and C.W. Waddle, of Abilene; and ten grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. D.C. Cassles, preceded him in death last Tuesday. He was also preceded in death by six children.

Funeral Sunday

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Old Concord Church, conducted by Rev. W.R. Zimmerman, of Mabank, former pastor of Jacobia, assisted by Rev. C.C. Childress.

Pallbearers will be: Emmett Waddle, Arthur Waddle, Charles Spradling, George Graham, all of Jacobia; J.R. Crawford, of Crandall; Malcolm Swann, Fernie Southall, and J.J. Gotcher, all of Greenville.
