Gus was born to Wilhelm Reinke and Johanna Gierke in Herman.

Early in his career, Gus was a teacher at the Garfield School in the town of Rhine. Later in life, he was a soda pop manufacturer in Plymouth.

He married Anna W Lindow on 6 October 1900 and the couple settled in Plymouth. They had six children: Leona - born in 1901, Raymond - born in 1902, Roland - born in 1904, Luvilla - born in 1907, LaVerne - born in 1910, Marlia - born in 1914, and Allyne - born in 1916.

Gus committed suicide 23 June 1919 in Plymouth over concerns related to his business.
