FRED METCALF

Fred Metcalf, 71, of Sarratt Drive, Shelby, N.C. died Sunday, December 29, 1996.

He was a native of Madison County, N.C. and had lived In Shelby for the past six years. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C. and also had served as deacon of Laurel Bend Baptist Church and choir director at Bethlehem Baptist Church for seven years. He served in the U.S. Army receiving two Victory Medals and three Bronze Battle Stars. He was the son of the late Arthur Metcalf and Florence Robinson Metcalf.

He was survived by his wife, Lucille Coates Metcalf; brother, Ernest Metcalf of Old Fort, N.C.; sisters, Jessie Fender of Marshall, N.C. and Edna Teague of Mars Hill, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 1996 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home with the Revs. Thomas Whitlock and Ken Parker officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

US Army WWII. Married Lucille February 17, 1948.
