During the late 1910s and early 1920s, John worked as a pattern maker. During the late 1920s, the company he worked for started downsizing. While John could have kept his job, he quit so that a married coworker with children could keep his job. After he left this job, he worked the rest of his life as a dental engineer.
On June 24, 1924 he married Nellie Isabelle Llewellyn (1903-1999). John and Nellie had two children: John Thomas Padley (1925- ) and Edith Ann Padley (1933- ).
During the early 1930s, John and his family lived in Brooklyn, New York. Later, John and his family moved to Garden City, New York. John and Nellie remained in Garden City until his retirement when they moved to Ormond Beach, Florida.
John died on February 3, 1994 due to old age.
