William "Bill" Sawyer was born December 13, 1912, in New Salem, Kansas to Harry S. and Ivy Thirsk. He was reared and educated in New Salem. On June 9, 1935, he married Lela Audean Neal. The couple farmed for many years and then Bill was employed as a truck driver in the oil fields before retiring from Butler Brothers in 1974. They enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing after retirement as well as their large family of children, grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Sawyer preceded him in death on August 24, 1993.
