"Death of Mrs. Mary Flanagan. Mrs. Mary Flanagan, of Helena, died last evening about 6 o'clock, in the 79th year of her age. The deceased was the mother of Mr. M.A. Flanagan, of Benton, and Mrs. T.C. Power, of this city. She was one of the early settlers of Dubuque, Iowa, but for a number of years past has been a resident of Montana. Mrs. Flanagan was a lady of rare Christian virtues, and was beloved by all who knew her. She was a kind and true friend and a loving mother, and in her was combined all the qualities which make home attractive and a sacred spot. In the fullness of years, and surrounded by her children, the gentle, loving mother closed her weary eyes and departed for brighter realms. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of all. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Thursday) morning, at 10 o'clock from the Catholic church." Helena Independent, 8/15/1883, page 5.

Mary died of intestinal disease. Her funeral expenses from Herrmann & Co. were paid by Thomas Power, her son-in-law, total charges $250.00.

Moved to Resurrection from the Old St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

An illustrated History of the State of Montana,' 1894, Joaquin Miller, page 367 (excerpt):

"M. A. Flanagan. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa, January 6, 1841, a son of Matthew and Mary (McNamara) Flanagan, natives of Ireland who came to America, married in New York State, settled upon a farm in Iowa, and for several years, in addition to farming, the father was a contractor and builder of highways. They had two children: Mary, now the wife of Hon. T. C. Power; and Michael A., whose name introduces this sketch. The father died in the fifty-sixth year of his age, and the mother at the age of sixty-five years (sic), both devout adherents of the Catholic faith and people of the highest respectability."
