He was born Jan. 30, 1940, in Lenox, TN, to George Edward and Mary Myrtle (Kolwyck) Childress.
Mr. Childress worked for 35 years at Ford Motor Company until his retirement in January, 2003. Jerry was an avid sports fan and his favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys.
On May 11, 1962, in New Chicago, IN, he married Sherry Cork, who survives.
Also surviving are three children, George (Vicki) Childress Jr. of LaPorte, Bill (Vernie) Childress of LaPorte and Mary Ann Childress of Fayetteville, AR; four grandchildren, Kristina (Rob) Childress McClure of Katy, TX, Matthew and Heather Robbins of LaPorte and Stephen Childress of Portage, IN; three step-grandchildren, James Smith of Portage, Nathan (Danielle) Strefling of Walkerton, IN, and Jake (Lacey) Strefling of Punta Gorda, FL; two step-great-grandchildren, Savanna and Lane Strefling; two sisters, Ann (Bob) Parchman of Ripley, TN, and Joan (Joe) May of Hammond, IN; one brother, Michael Childress of LaPorte; one brother-in-law, Bill Stafford of Lake Station, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Virginia "Faye" Stafford; and two brothers, James Edward "Demo" Childress and Gene Bennet Childress.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor James Bouslog officiating. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Cremation will take place following services.
