He was one of the many children of Sir John Savage, K.B., of Clifton, Cheshire, by his wife Katherine, daughter of Thomas Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley, K.G.
On December 3, 1492, he was nominated Bishop of Rochester. He was consecrated on April 28, 1493. He held the post until 1497 when he was translated to be Bishop of London.
Thomas's last post was as Archbishop of York from 1501 to 1507. He was translated from the see of London on January 18, 1501.
While he was Archbishop he handled the marriage ceremony of Arthur, Prince of Wales to Catherine of Aragon. Arthur died young, and his brother Henry, who became Henry VIII, then married Catherine.
Archbishop Savage died in September 1507, either on the 2nd or the 3rd.
His body being buried at York where his effigy remains and his heart at Macclesfield in Cheshire, where he built a chapel at the side of the church and intended to have a college there.
