Agnes Aitken was the daughter of James Aitken and Margaret Scott.

She married James Smith Brown on August 5, 1873, in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland [Ancestry.com's, "Scotland, Select Marriages, 1561-1910"]; they were married until his death on July 29, 1909.

Although Violet Jane Brown was born on August 9, 1871, in Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, she was shown as the daughter of James Smith Brown and Agnes Aitken [Ancestry.com's, "Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950"]. The couple and their two young children, Violet Jean Brown and James Lang Brown, immigrated to the United States in the mid-1870s and settled in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.

On the 1880 Census, San Francisco, James Brown was the head of the household where his wife, Agnes, and their children, Violet, James, Lizzie, and Charles, resided.

On the 1900 Census, San Francisco, James Brown was not found. Agnes Brown, a married landlady, born in Scotland, resided with her children, Agnes, Jessie, and Arthur; son Ralph, who would have been 15 by then, appears to have lived outside of the home.

The couple had eight children, all of whom died in California, namely:
VIOLET JEAN (BROWN) MOGAN [Mrs. Joseph A. Mogan]
(August 9, 1871, Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland -
July 27, 1944, San Francisco, San Francisco County);
JAMES LANG BROWN
(September 22, 1873, Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland -
June 26, 1943, San Francisco, San Francisco County);
ELIZABETH ("LIZZIE") LANG (BROWN) [WILLIAMS] BAERNE
[Mrs. Sheridan Rawson Williams / Mrs. Louis Joseph Baerne]
(September 14, 1877, San Francisco - May 20, 1947, Los Angeles County);
CHARLES BROWN
(ca 1878, California - unknown);
AGNES AITKEN (BROWN) [STOERMER] [NICEWONGER] DAVIDSON
[Mrs. William Stoermer / Mrs. (unknown) Nicewonger / Mrs. Lee Willie Davidson]
September 2, 1883, California - December 21, 1973, Los Angeles County);
RALPH DOUGLAS BROWN
(January 21, 1885, San Francisco - May 5, 1952, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County);
JESSIE (BROWN) KALMAR [Mrs. Bert Kalmar]
(August 24, 1889 [not 1892], California - January 14, 1985, Los Angeles County); and
ALBERT N. BROWN, aka Arthur N. Browne
(May 29, 1890, California - July 13, 1956, San Francisco, San Francisco County).

The widow, Agnes (Aitken) Brown, married Emil August Adolph Klose, son of Heinrich August Klose and Johanna Louise Mathilde Kuhne, between 1910 and 1920. They were married until his death on November 14, 1923, in San Francisco.
