Dear Helen,

Well here's that letter you said you bet you would never get, be some letter too i'll bet. What do you think? Once when you can't say "it's all up to you". Not a bad start.
Boy did i spend some week last week, I went to bed when i got home Sunday night or Monday morning which ever it was and didn't get up till Friday noon and i haven't been outside yet. I had a temperature(some sp.) of 104 [degrees] Monday morning, pretty warm for January and did i cough, so the folks called the doctor to see if i was going to live, well I'm still alive. Better luck next time Helena.
I don't know what you thought when I had Mother call you Sunday A.M. but you said you wanted me to let you know when I couldn't come and I was so hoarse I couldn't talk out of a whisper, so I hope you will forgive me, hows about it?
I sure hated to miss that show Sunday night, I guess it was YOU I missed seeing, sure been thinking about you. How did you get over your cold? Hope you had better luck than I did. Mother and Charlotte were in bed too, Charlotte is all right now but Mom got up to soon and is back in bed today and do we need a housekeeper. You don't want a job, boy you just ought to see this house at times. Charlotte and dad are cleaning house now and Oh Boy!
This letter sure is getting good, I believe the flu effected my mind or something. It's starting to remind me of Fern's letters.
Well what all has been happening the last week, I suppose Hanson was up last night giving you the Ha! ha! because I broke another date, darn the luck. Anyway I suppose your beginning I'm a damn poor boyfriend but gosh! kid I couldn't help this and I hope we have better luck from now on or at least I figured you would let me come up again, how about it? (don't fail me) guess I'm doing the failing.
Murray came up last evening with a pie so we changed our menu from eggs to chocalate (more spelling) pie, not a bad change for a change. (good grammar)
You remember i was telling you [sic] mother let me take some chickens and put them in the brooder houseand i could have part of the profits? Well I took about 60 and mother has about 280 in the hen house, last night we found twice asmany eggs from my chickens as mothers and did i get a big laugh. We ought to have some spending money anyway hadn't we,unless she backs out, there will be hell to pay if she does.
Well guess I'm all out of writing material, I sure hope this will pass as a letter and that you will answer right away because HONEST I'm lonesome for you. I'm sure you will do better than I did last winter, I've really been sorry about that but you said you would forgive me and i usually take you on your word you sweet lttle thing you.
I don't know soon this will get mailed but I will send it as soon as possible.I imagine dad will go after the mail this afternoon and he can mail it then.
Well I hope this will find you and all the rest of your family well and I sure would like to come up as soon as possible. How about keeping next Sunday P.M. open if I'm O.K.
With lots of love
Merlin
