CRUSHED BY SLATE

Charles Bennett Dies On Way To Outside Of Mine

Another mine accident, this time at Sprague, took as a toll the life of Charles Bennett, well known in Beckley who lived on the Harper road about a mile from the city. The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon while Bennett was in his room at work alone.

A driver was attracted by his cries and removed the slate from his body. He was hauled to the outside by Lee Withrow, motorman, but died before medical assistance could reach him. He did not live long enough to tell how he was caught under the slate fall.

His chest and pelvis was crushed, a leg broken and probably injuries to the spine. The body was removed to the undertaking palors of C. C. Rose and prepared for burial.

Mr. Bennett married Izoria Bailey, a daughter of Marshall Bailey, several years ago from which union four children were born. He owned a little truck farm on the Harper road and worked this during the truck season but had secured work at the Sprague mine for the winter.

Mr. Bennett bore a good reputation and was a hard working man providing for his family and attending strictly to business.

It is said he leaves some insurance and his wife and children will receive benefits from the workmen's compensation act.

After funeral services interment was made Saturday morning at Prosperity.
