She was born May 19, 1917, at Harbor Beach, the daughter of Asa and Luella (Honey) Phelps. Her father died when she was 2 years old and she was raised by George and Cora Bates.
She graduated from Mayville High School with the Class of 1935. She married Roland M O'Brien on 24 Jun 1943 in Flint MI. She was employed as a clerk at the former Sherk's Drug Store and Village Pharmacy in Mayville for many years. She formerly attended the Pleasant View Free Methodist Church of Mayville, taught Sunday School and was church treasurer many years ago. She was also children's nursery director at the church for many years and served as church librarian.
Survivors include her husband Roland, of Mayville; a brother Wray and his wife Vera Vincent of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law Laura Bates of Sebewaing; special niece, Shirley L. (Mrs Bruce) Shafer of Lapeer; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five sisters, Helen Woodhurst, Esther Phelps, Myrtle Flaraghty, Florence Louelia Andrews, and Edith Phelps; and three brothers, Arthur Bates, Wilbur Bates, and Clifford Bates.
Funeral services held at the Pleasant View Free Methodist Church with Rev. G. Robert Sawyer and Rev. Kenneth Boileau officating, arrangements made by Tiffin Funeral Home in Mayville. Burial in Fremont Township Cemetery, Mayville.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Pleasant View Free Methodist Church or the Fisher Convalescent Home.
