John was born in 1827 to James Brown Pike and Elizabeth Carberry. During the outbreak of the Mexican War he joined Co C 4th Indiana Infantry. He served in Mexico under General Winfield Scott, the Commander of the U.S. Army. On 14 Sep 1847 Mexico City was captured. After the war, when gold was discovered in California, many members of the Pike family traveled westward. John, his father, and other family members settled in Jefferson, Wapello, and Mahaska counties in Iowa in 1849.

John married Elizabeth Frasier in 1850 in Wapello County, Iowa. Together they had four children: Anderson Victor, Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth, John Zebulon, and William Henry.

When the outbreak of the Civil War took place, John enlisted as a Private at Mahaska County on 17 Oct 1861. He mustered into Co F 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Due to health concerns, John was transferred to Co K 1st Mississippi Marine Brigade Volunteer Infantry on 7 Apr 1863. He served with the brigade through the siege of Vicksburg until the end of the war.

Elizabeth died 10 Mar 1864 in Kirkville at the age of 32 years 9 months 4 days. John married Ann Eliza Hull on 2 Dec 1866 at Nodaway County, Missouri. Ann's parents were Cornelius Hull and Jane A Wyatt, both buried at Maryville. Together they had eight children: Eva Eliza, James Cornelius, Lucy Ann, George Washington, Isabelle May, Herman Wyatt, Rufus Vernon, and Leon Wilson.

John died in 1910 at Kirkville at the age of 82 years. Ann died at the home of their daughter and family in Monroe County, Iowa in 1930.
