Forrest "Pop" Howell, 83, of Ashton died Sunday, September 12, 1999, at Ashton Memorial Nursing Home. "Pop" was born May 8, 1916, at Warm River, the sixth of 12 children of David T. and Zina Iowa Gunter Howell. He graduated from the eighth grade at Warm River. His father died and left his mother with eight children. "Pop" never went to high school. He worked on the family farm and also held a job with the railroad to help support the family. "Pop" married Louise Marotz on March 19, 1942, in Idaho Falls. After he retired form farming, he worked for the Forest Service in Island Park as a part of a greenthumb program until his health failed as the result of a stroke in 1990. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran church and active on committees for the Fremont Co-op for 20 years. He served as a chairman of the A.S.C.S. for six years. He loved hunting big game and taking trips throughout the United States. "Pop" had a love for farming and raising cattle. He is survived by his wife, Louise of Ashton; a daughter, Anita [Chuck] Brazier of Ashton; a son Richard [Elena] Howell of Idaho Falls, a sister, June McCord of Ashton; a brother, Bud Howell of St. Anthony; two grandchildren, Ethan and Jennifer; five step-grandchildren, Kim, Heidi, Tiffany, Laura and Crystal, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Zina, and brothers; Joe Howell, Ed Howell, Dallas "Hoover" Howell, Daniel Howell, Jason Howell, David Howell and Russell "Mope" Howell. Services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ashton.
