MRS. C. WEMPEN, 79 DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
Widow of J. H. Wempen, Taken Suddenly Ill Saturday Night, Succumbs Early Sunday. Was Resident of Alton 60 years
For a Number of Years She Had Been Member of Evangelical Church --- Funeral Tuesday
Mrs. Caroline Wempen, widow of J. H. Wempen, died at her home on Washington avenue at 6:30 o'clock Sunday morning after a short illness of acute indigestion. Mrs. Wempen was taken ill Saturday night and as late as 1 o'clock Sunday morning was bright and cheerful when a turn for worse come and she passed into her sleep, gently, and without pain.
Mrs. Wempen was one of the old residents of Alton, having come her 60 years ago. Had she lived until the coming November she would have been 80 years of age. She was the head of one of Alton's well known families and because of her love of the younger people and their acquaintance held a place in the hearts of many.
Mrs. Wempen has for a long number of years been a member of the Evangelical church and when she was physically able was an attendant of this church. Mrs. Wempen moved into the home she died in on Washington avenue many years ago when Washington avenue was not as built up as now and she has always been a good neighbor to her circle of neighboring friends in the vicinity. Mrs. Wempen leaves eight children, Mrs. John J. Roach and Mrs. V. L. Duke, of Redlands, Cal,; Mrs. M. E. Garstand, of Urbana, Ill., and H. J. and J. E. Wempen, Mrs. P. W. Cruze, Mrs. J. Wilbyr Sloat and Miss Caroline Wempen all of Alton.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the home on Washington avenue and the Rev. O. W. Heggemeier of the Evangeilcal church will conduct the funeral.
