First Lieutenant Herbert H. Hirth, 23-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hirth, 923 Cherokee street, was one of 16 persons killed in the crash of a Paris-bound army transport plane March 3, the war department announced Thursday.

Lieutenant Hirth attended Tulane university for a year after graduation from Fortier High school and entered the army in 1941. He had been on foreign duty since last July.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Thomas William Hirth.
