Joseph was b. to James & Mary (Phillippi) Lanning. His occupation was ore digger. Joseph m. first Mary Frazier, who d. in 1854 at age 20. They might have had a couple of daughters, Mary b. about 1851 and Sarah b. about 1854, who were listed in the 1860 census for Mary's parents, Jonathan & Mary Frazier, in Hocking Co. In 1856, Joseph secondly m. Margaret Skinner. Joseph & Margaret (Skinner) Lanning had twelve children.
