Samuel Fay was the son of John and Sarah (called Sally) (Whiting) Fay, was born in Grantham on August 24, 1813. He grew to love farming, and, for a time, was a farm hand on his brother-in-law Aaron Fiske's farm in Jaffrey.

On April 1, 1857 Samuel married Amanda M. Parsons. Both were residents of Lowell, Massachusetts. The ceremony was performed by Justice of The Peace, M. G. Hoover(?). This is Samuel's 2nd marriage.

He married Mary Ellis, daughter of Nathan and Lucinda (Bingham) Ellis of Gilsum, on September 9, 1871 in a ceremony in Nelson. He is 47 and she is 44.
