John's parents divorced in 1916 and he and his siblings and a half-brother, Francis Leland were ultimately raised by their grandparents Walter and Minnie Neal on a farm East of Winfield, Kansas. John met and married Lois Olive Walker on October 12, 1940, in Wichita, Kansas. They made their home in Winfield where they raised two sons:
• 11-03-1942, Charles Allen Neal
• 08-17-1946, Norman Dee Neal
John worked at the Consolidated Flour Mill in Winfield, and later in Wichita. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, fishing and camping.
