Laura Isabell Chewning Gallahan, 89, died Friday, June 15, 2012 at Woodmont Health Care Center.

Mrs. Gallahan was the last surviving member of the family of Lester Berry Chewning and Laura Dempsey Chewning. She grew up on the Chewning farm, now known as the Wagner Tract, a preserved Civil War Battlefield. She was the wife of the late Herbert Ashton Gallahan.

Mrs. Gallahan had retired from the C & P Telephone Company. She was a long-time volunteer with the Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Fredericksburg Senior Citizens Group and a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church.

Survivors include her three nephews, Carlton Onderdonk and wife Shirley of Fredericksburg, Bradley Chewning and wife Mary Ellen of Harrisonburg, and Marvin Shelton and wife Delores Ann of West Virginia; three nieces, Nancy Carter and husband Bobby of Spotsylvania, Christine Michalec and Bertha Shelton of Norfolk, and many extended family members.

A service will be held at noon on Wednesday, June 20 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
