Alex E. Vitali Sr., 88, of Chisholm died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, in Leisure Hills Health Center, Hibbing.

He was born July 12, 1909, in Hibbing, to Joseph and Ann (Galinati) Vitali. He attended Chisholm schools and was a lifelong Chisholm resident.

He was united in marriage on Feb. 6, 1932, in Chisholm, to Ann C. Shuster. He was a retired U.S. Steel worker. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chisholm, Knights of Columbus-Chisholm Council 3539, Italian American Club, Christopher Columbus Society, a charter member of the Chisholm Sportsmen's Club, and was active in Hibbing bowling leagues. He served as a Chisholm city councilman and also as a School Board member. He served as an officer in the local Steelworkers union and was an avid sportsman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Minnie, Catherine, Mary and Righetta.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; sons: James (Lois), and Alex Jr. (Marian); daughters: Marlene Burn, Joan (Peter) Kayfes, and Kathy (Jim) Mehle; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five sisters: Attilia Maturi, Zelinda (Henry) Hendrickson, Elvira Hooper, Josephine (Roland) Carpenter, and Anita (Frank) Vovk; two brothers: Rudolph (Anne) and Julio (Marilyn); and numerous nephews and nieces.

Burial in Chisholm Cemetery.
