From an article in the Athens Messenger, dated May 24, 1929:
JOSEPH MCDONALD OF BISHOPVILLE PIONEER

BISHOPVILLE, May 24 - (Staff Special) Farmer, painter, carpenter, blacksmith, and a jack-of-all-trades, and all of these are Joseph D. McDonald, of this community, who is sharing his 81st birthday. He was born June 11, 1848, and though suffering from rheumatism, is still in good health.

Mr. McDonald, who was born and has lived all of his life in the vicinity of Bishopville, remembers when there were but three houses in the community. He now resides in one of these with his son. The house has served as a dwelling, general store, and high school building during the life of this village.

Leaving school at the age of 16, having completed the arithmetic and grammar of the old school, Mr. McDonald went to work clearing away the timber on his father's farm. The oxen were kept in a cave formerly used by Shep Tinker as a stable for his horses. The farm of the family lay adjoining what as then known as the "Big Woods".

Mr. McDonald, often called "J.D." to distinguish him from his son, Joseph M., is the son of Joseph and Chrissa Hall McDonald, and is the fourth of a family of 12. He married Mary Jane Lewis in 1866. To this union, eight children were born. Seven of them are living: Joseph M. and Mrs. John Milhoan of Bishopville; Mrs. Richard Frazier of Oakdale; Mrs. John Wagner of Mid-Hocking; Mrs. Joseph Cheney of Glouster; Mrs. Guy Triplett of Trimble; and Mrs. Dave Kinder of Jacksonville. His eldest son, Lewis, died several years ago. Mr. McDonald has 36 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
