John lived in Floyd, Oneida County, New York before 1820. From 1820 to 1850 he lived in New Hartford, Oneida County, New York. He was a cotton manufacturer in New York.

Under the heading: "MANUFACTURES" in New Hartford is this: "Above are Howell's two factories, the New Hartford Mill and Washington Mill." Source: Annals of Oneida County by Pomroy Jones 1851, page 286

In 1854 John moved his business to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. John and Eliza and some of their children came to Davenport by way of the Great Lakes to Chicago and then by train, which had just opened up to Rock Island.

"Mr. Howell, an old time resident of this city and well known as a dealer in cotton-batting, died this morning. The funeral will take place from his late residence, Sunday next." Source: Daily Davenport Democrat, Friday 17 February 1871, front page
