Lawrence-Ralph E. Pine Sr., 87, died Thursday, Dec. 27, at a Lawrence hospital.
Mr. Pine owned and operated grocery stores in Lawrence 35 years before he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War I and the Mexican Border War.
He was born Sept. 15, 1897, in Douglas County, the son of W. A. and Margaret Jones Pine and spent most of his life in the Lawrence community. He attended White Grade School in Douglas County and Lawrence Business College.
Mr. Pine was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawrence, a charter member of Dorsey Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion in Lawrence, and was the first recipient of the Noon Kiwanis Substantial Citizens Award.
He was a former member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, had served on the Lawrence City Council 12 years and the Lawrence School Board 12 years and had been president of the school board seven years.
He was married to Helen Ward Oct. 12, 1921, at Lawrence. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Ralph Pine, Jr. and Wayne Pine, both of Lawrence; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 pm Saturday at Rumsey Funeral Home in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Lawrence. Mr. Pine will lie in state after 9 am today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association or Centenary United Methodist Church, both at Lawrence.
