BENJAMIN SHOUP - On Monday evening, March 11, 1901, at his late home in Milledgeville occurred the death of Benjamin Shoup, aged 71 years, 8 months, and 13 days. Mr. Shoup was born June 28, 1829, in Canada, nine miles from Niagara Falls. When twelve years of age he moved sixty miles farther west to Canada to Walpole township. Here on Aug. 31, 1853, he was united in marriage to Miss Charlotte Nablo, who still survives him. In 1856 he came west to Mt. Carroll, Illinois. He remained there one year and then resided in South Elkhorn, Carroll County about two years. From South Elkhorn he moved to Jordan, Whiteside County, where he purchased a farm on which he lived until 1890 when he bought a home in Milledgeville in which place he lived until his death. To Mr. and Mrs. Shoup were born two children, a son, Walter J., who resides on the farm in Jordan, and a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Fuller of Lake City, Iowa, both of whom were at his bedside during the latter part of his illness. Mr. Shoup always followed the occupation of farming, was of a quiet disposition and had strong attachments for home. In March, 1856, he united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada and after settling in Jordan he became a member of the Methodist Church of that locality. His sickness was a lingering one, having been gradually failing in health for several months prior to his death. The funeral services were held from the Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. , Wednesday, March 13, 1901, Rev. C. A. Gage officiating, burial taking place in the South Elkhorn cemetery.
