Pauline Mitchell, 70, died of cancer Tuesay afternoon, Sept. 4, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Raymond C. Lott of the Grinnell United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials in Mrs. Mitchell's name may be made to the Mayflower Home Health Care Center or the Grinnell United Methodist Church.

The daughter of Bert and Ida Mitchelltree Johnson, she was born west of Montezuma on Feb. 21, 1914. She attended rural school and Searsboro High School.

On Oct. 14, 1938, she was married to Earl A. Mitchell at Lancaster, Mo. The couple had lived in Grinnell since, and she was associated with her husband in the operation of his business Mitchell Sales and Music. She had also worked the former Safeway and United Food stores.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Grinnell General Hospital Auxiliary and was active in the Republican Party.

She is survived by her step-children, Leland Mitchell of Myrtle Point, Ore., Earl A. Mitchell Jr. of Little Rock, Ark., Nadine Fales of Greeley, Colo., and John E. Mitchell of Denver, Colo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters, Alvin Johnson of St. Claire Shores, Mich., Waunita Millslagle of Grinnell, Ruby Halblom of Newton and Bert Johnson of Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; her parents; and four brothers and sisters, Genevieve Bennett, Theodore Johnson, and Edward and Virginia Johnson in infancy.
