LETTERS FROM OLD TOWN HOME FOLKS
Trip on a Packet Boat in 1843
Mrs. Atha K. Crane
For The Patriot:
About the year 1843, there was a boat running on the canal, from Oswego to Syracuse, called a packet boat; it was a boat that carried passengers to and from the terminals and the country lying between these cities. Ziba Kendall was the captain of this boat.
As this boat was to arrive at Fulton at a certain, time, to be "looked through", my father took me to town to see the boat and to ride from one lock to the other. We went towards
Oswego, just below where the first lock was located, and waited there until the boat came along.
As I was a pet of uncle, I was greeted most cordially by him, and this was my first ride on the "raging canal". This was the great event of my life. None of my playmates had ever been on the packet. We rode through all the locks, standing on the deck, and the boat rising and going down affected my nerves to the limit; I think I enjoyed it more after was over than at the time of the ride...
