Married Johannah Wholley in 1861 in Ireland.
According to family history, John and Johannah settled in Victor, NY and went to work for the Chapin family who lived on Victor-Holcomb Road.
The Chapin family helped develop the Spy apple. John worked in the orchards and on the farm. When he saved enough money to buy the land on Cherry Street they wouldn't sell it to him as he was a "greenhorn". A friend, Charlie Green, who lived where the Apple Farm in Victor is today, bought the land for him and John gave him the money.
A child of John and Johanna was Mary, who was born October 8, 1862 in Ireland and died 1864 in passage to America.
According to family history, Mary died just before they docked. The captain wanted to bury the child at sea, but the Barry's persuaded him to let them take the infant ashore. They brought her to Canandaigua where she was buried in Potter's field.
