ADKINS, JAMES FRANK
A tragic fire early Mon morning took the life of 66 year old Frank Adkins, Rt. 1. The coroner estimated Adkins died at 2:30 am CST in the fire which destroyed the 23 foot camper in which Adkins lived. The camper was on the Louis Lovins farm about ½ mile from the Marshall Ridge Rd. The body was found inside the camper near the front door. Adkins apparently came close to escaping before he was overcome by the smoke and flames. The flames leveled a barn 10 feet from the and destroyed Adkins' 1972 Mercury, which was parked in front of the camper. The lovins Home is about 75 yards away. "When I woke up the whole inside of the barn was completely afire," Lovins said, " and the trailer was blazing." An explosion woke Lovins and his wife. The noise was probably heard when the diesel tank on his tractor exploded. The tractor was parked inside the barn. "I think the fire must have started in the barn," Lovins said, "because the wind was coming out of the west and the trailer was on the east side of the barn." He said Adkins may have been in the barn before the fire started. A discarded cigarette, or wiring in the barn, are 2 possible causes for the fire, though no one knows for sure how the fire started. The fire had done extensive damage before the local volunteer fire department was called. "By the time we got there the barn and the trailer were about gone," fireman Wayne Edwards said. Firemen stayed at the scene for 2 hours. Adkins had lived on the Lovins farm for 2 years. Lovins estimated the property loss at $20,000 to $25,000. The tractor, which cost $4,700, had just been purchased. The stock barn was not new but was in good condition. Hand tools and 500 bales of hay were also destroyed in the barn. He said a small part of the loss was covered by insurance. The barn was insured for $4,000. The camper, trailer, hay, and tools were not insured.
