Salem Cook, 75, Expired at His Home in Curtisville Tuesday Evening.

FUNERAL IS THURSDAY

Heart complications from which he had suffered for the past few months caused the death Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock of Salem Cook, one of the best known residents of the Curtsville community. His condition had not been serious until the past ten days and is believed to have been aggravated by flu.

The deceased was born in Ohio, May 18, 1857 but had been a resident of this county since a child, coming here with his parents, Jonathan and Susannah (Regal) Cook. He was the last of several children born to this pioneer couple.

Salem Cook was reared on the farm and followed that occupation for many years. In 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Abigail Mooney of the Windfall community and seven children were born as a restult of this union, all growing to maturity and six are surviving. The mother died in 1921. The surviving children are Mrs. Minnie Wood and Mrs. Sarah Culbertson of Alexandria, Loren Cook of Curtisville; Mrs. Margaret Goetz of Gary; Mrs. Pauline Murray and Mrs. Susan Whitaker of Elwood.

In September, 1923, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Genava Leavell, widow of Los Leavell, of the Curtisville community, and the widow and several stepchildren survive. The stepchildren are Boone Leavell, of the Curtisville community; Mrs. Glenna Nash, of the Point Isabel community; Mrs. Charles Perry, of Lafayette, and Mrs. Ralph Davenport, of South Bend. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.

Salem Cook was a man who commanded the confidence and respect of all and he was a splendid citizen. For many years he had been a member of the Christian church of Curtisville. After leaving the farm he was employed for 25 years or more in the tin mills at Elwood.

After his marriage to Mrs. Leavell in 1923 they moved to Curtisville, where they have since resided.

Funeral services will be held at the Curtisville Christian church Thursday afternoon at l:30, with Rev. Joel H. Hull, of Summitville, in charge and burial will be in the Elwood cemetery.
