William "Bill" Herbert Newman, 75, of Williamsburg, VA, died on July 31, 2004.

He was born in Rutledge, MO, on October 13, 1928, the second son of George William and Nellie Mae Francis Newman.

He was retired from the U.S. Army with 23 years of distinguished service. He received numerous awards during his service for outstanding performance, including the Bronze Star Medal. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam. Bill was a longtime resident of Williamsburg, VA, moving to the area in 1960.

He married Elsie Marianna Kutzner on January 9, 1949, and then was married to Irene T. Blankenship on June 21, 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father on December 31, 1956 and mother on April 27, 1982; one brother, Joe Francis Newman, December 18, 1949; and three sisters, Linda Kay Newman, August 10, 1950, Willa Mae Overfield, April 7, 2001, of Memphis, MO, and Donna Jean Howe, February 29, 2004, of California, MO; two brothers-in-law, Wallace Overfield, Jr., August 11, 1985, of Memphis, MO, and William J. Howe, April 25, 2003, of California, MO.

Surviving is his wife of 30 years, Irene T. Newman; his children, Kay Nordeman and her husband, Craig of Williamsburg, Billy Newman and his wife, Sandy of Williamsburg, Patty Sparks and her husband, Larry of Fredricksburg, Kenneth L. Bowman and his wife, Brenda of Seaford, Donald F. Bowman and his wife, Marian of Marion, Anita B. Story and her husband, Kippy of Chester, Janeen Frazier and her husband, Mike of Meadows of Dan, all of Virginia, and Albert Blankenship, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Elmira, NY; 15 grandchildren, Cori Tobler, Tina Sawyer, Curt Nordeman, Jackie and Dana Newman, all of Williamsburg, VA, and Brooke and Matt Sparks of Fredricksburg, VA, Ronald Lang of Chester, VA, Kristina Lang of Williamsburg, VA, Michael Puckett of USS Roosevelt, Lindsay and Drew Puckett of Meadows of Dan, VA, Lindsay Bowman of Seaford, David Bowman of Indiana and Brian Bowman of Marion, VA; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Newland of Moberly, MO; many nieces and nephews, including Peggy Westhoff Brown and family of Memphis, MO; and Kathy Holtschlag and family of Quincy, IL.

A funeral service to celebrate his life was held August 3, 2004, at Nelson Funeral Home, Williamsburg, VA. His body was cremated and the burial will be held, with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on September 20, 2004. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA.
