Edwin R Carey Sr. of Simi Valley passed away Thursday, Feb 26, 2004, surrounded by his devoted wife and children.
Alzheimer's had been taking its gradual toll over the past few years. Edwin was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Afton, Iowa. After high school, he moved to California, where he had been a Simi Valley resident for more than 50 years. His interest in aviation led to his many years of employment at Rocketdyne. He helped open the doors as a charter member on Nov. 7, 1955, when Rocketdyne became a division of Rockwell International. Edwin received several certificates of award for his suggestions and designs of tool development for use in the space program. Edwin's love for flight brought him to one of his greatest accomplishments, his solo flight in a Cessna 150, at the airport in Simi Valley. His hobbies included woodworking fixing anything, rebuilding VW engines and bowling. Edwin served our country in the U.S. Navy. His love for his country was evident in his daily patriotism as he faithfully flew his country's flag. He was extremely proud to have three grandsons currently serving in the armed forces.
He is survived by his loving wife, Victryn L. Carey. They were married Dec 25, 1971. He is also survived by his eight children, Donna Lea, Edwin Carey Jr. (wife Sharon), Dianne Carey, Patricia Smith (husband Doug), Pamela Carey (husband Ray), Penni Boxley, Kerri Launer (husband Craig) and Kelli Stephens (husband Colen), He was the proud grandfather of 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
