Nellie was born in Riverside, CA on September 11, 1928 and was the eldest of 17 children. She was later married to Ralph Acuña on April 4, 1948 in Brawley.
Nellie was a warm and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand mother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed baking cakes for different family celebrations, gardening, cooking, attending church and watching her novelas.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
Mass will commence at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 21 at Sacred Heart Church with Father Bernardo Ranoa officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ralph Y. Acuña; daughter, Mary Helen; parents, Feliciano and Elena Duarte, sister, Catalina and nephew, Robert Raya.
Nellie is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph Jr. and Margarita Acuña of El Centro and Richard and Gina Acuña of Cypress, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Delfina and Freddy Grijalva of Brawley; sons, Manuel Acuña of Escondido, CA and Alex Acuña of San Diego.
She will be missed by her grandchildren, Baleria Magana, Ralph, Willie, and Rebecca Acuña, John and James Acuña, Audrey and A.J. Grijalva and also leaves behind 3 great-grandchildren Crystal, Silvino, and Esperanza Magana.
Nellie leaves behind 15 brothers and sisters. Sisters and their spouses, Frances and Gaspar Raya, Maria Elena Mendibles, Sara and Ascencion Reyes, Susan and Joe Lucio and Lina Hernandez, all of Brawley and Sandra and Ruben Perez of Mission Viejo; brothers and their spouses, Feliciano and Lydia Duarte, Nick and Obdulia Duarte, Daniel and Conchita Duarte, Raul and Esther Duarte and Turi Duarte, all of Brawley, Albert Duarte of El Centro, George and Ruth Duarte of Calexico, Leonard and Phyllis Duarte of Chico and Eddie and Sandy Duarte of Seattle, WA and aunt Rita San Roman of Brawley and numerous nieces and nephews.
