Larry S. Moody Sr was the son of Perry Jack Moody (b 1905, d 1999) and Maude O. Gore (b 1908, d 1980). His siblings included Norman Moody (a US Army World War II Veteran, b 1922, d 2016), Nona Matson (b 1924), Geneva A. Knight (b 1926, d 2010), and Raymond Moody (a US Navy Vietnam War Veteran). He graduated and played football for the Crescent City High School Rebels, and gained employment as a furniture builder for Florida Furniture Inc, and as a commercial fisherman on the St Johns River before entering his ultimate career as a Florida law enforcement officer. He was hired as a Dispatcher by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office in 1964 and served within that Department as a Deputy until 1970, when he became a Constable for District I (Crescent City) and served until 1973. He subsequently transferred to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office in 1973 and served as a Captain (Narcotics) and Chief Deputy until he accepted employment with the State Attorney's Office, 7th Juducial Circuit, State of Florida, as an Investigator in 1981 through 1988. As a result of a new State Attorney being elected in, he was released and was hired by the Flagler Beach Police Department as a Lieutenant (Shift Supervisor) and worked there until 1992. When another State Attorney was elected, Larry Moody was rehired and promoted to Senior Investigator by the State Attorney's Office, 7th Judicial Circuit and worked until retiring with that organization in 1996 with 32 years in Florida law enforcement with expertise in vice, narcotics, homicide and street crime. He also served as a Reserve Lieutenant (Game Warden) with the Florida Game & Fresh Water Fish Commission from 1983 through 1996. Two of Larry Moody's greatest investigations and arrests included the Jeffrey Daugherty investigation that resulted in the serial killer's arrest, conviction, and subsequent execution in Florida's Electric Chair, as well as the largest illegal alcohol ("moonshine") bust in St John's County's History. His skill in homocide was exceptional, and his wife, Becky, would often scold him with "Larry Moody, get your work off my table," and "No one can eat with your morbid 8X10s ruining everyone's appitite!" His retirement speech in December 1996 was a classic still remembered by all in attendance today for its grateful thanks and farewell to loyal bretheren as well as its scathing and insulting venom toward enemies with an invitation to "take off the badge and meet me outside if you have the guts" directed toward the latter. He was married twice during his law enforcement career. From his first wife, Amy L. Bassford, his children included Larry S. Moody Jr, Jeffrey Scott Moody, and Tammy L. Wolfe. His second wife, Rebecca Fillinger, gave him one stepdaughter, Susan M. Barzelogna. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bunnell and the First Baptist Church of Satsuma for many years. He was also a member and Past Master of Bunnell Lodge 200, Free and Accepted Masons, as well as a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner. In his free time, he was an advid shooter, fisherman, traveler, Skipper of the Southern Comfort and hunter. Larry loved Mountainman reenactments and rondevous, history, calling turkeys, catching blue crabs, Red Man Gold chewing tobacco and American classic movies. He loved his grandchildren dearly and spent as much time as he could on the St Johns River. Larry loved his bulldog (a cross between an English Bulldog and an American Bulldog), Bo, and always treated him more human than canine. Bo was his live-in companion for the last 9 years of his life, watched television with him and was fed a plate off the table whenever he sat down to eat. Larry also loved scotch and often called it the Elixer of Life or Drink of the Gods. He suffered greatly from Type II Diabetes, battled it bravely for an extended life, and finally succumbed to inoperable congestive heart failure as a result of it. Larry came to be known as the Mayor of Buffalo Bluff, Big M, and PawPaw Moody by his community, fellow officers and his grandchildren. He died peacefully among Family at the Hospice Care Wing of Florida Hospital, Ormond Beach, Florida. His favorite saying was, "Only the rocks live forever." (Work in progress.)
