He married his first wife, Julia Ann Cantrell, on October 14, 1866. They were blessed with eight children: William Erastus Smith, James Monroe Smith, John Wooten Smith, George Thomas Smith, Andrew W. Smith, Absalom Alonzo "Abb" Smith, Minnie E. Smith and Sarah M.A. (Mattie) Smith. Julia Ann died on September 11, 1887.
He married his second wife, Sarah Ellen Hornsby, on February 1, 1888 in Scott County, Arkansas. This union was blessed with four children: Myrtle Smith, Fred Smith, Bessie Smith and Lula Smith.
He died on January 19, 1899 in Scott County, Arkansas. he was 58 years old.
