Alexander was born on 3 February 1864 in the village of Corroy-le-Grand in the Belgian province of Brabant Wallon to Jean Francois (Frank) Flemal. and Anne Marie Thérèse Bousman. When Alexander was five years old the family immigrated to the U.S. and settled at Misiere in Door County, Wisconsin (see bio of Jean François "Frank" Flemal).

Alexander joined with his parents in their enterprises of farming, storekeeping, saloonkeeping, and cheesemaking at Misiere. Upon the deaths of his parents Alexander assumed management of the family businesses, which he continued until his own death in 1928.

On 22 October 1887 Alexander married Josephine A. DeDecker, a local girl whose parents farmed 1.5 miles north of Misiere. Alexander and Josephine had twelve children (see bio of Josephine Flemal).
