His father Frederick was one of several brothers (2 of them being F.G Niedringhaus & William F. Niedringhaus) who emigrated from Germany to America & settled in the St. Louis, MO area. Frederick was a carpenter & F.G. & William F. were tinners. They started the St. Louis Stamping Company, for the manufacture of tinware, the original plant being at Second and Cass streets in St. Louis. The business outgrew the city location, and in 1895 they erected an immense plant in Granite City, which produced Royal Granite steel-ware. It was the biggest of its kind in the world, employing 1,200 people in the year 1912.
