Thomas H. Everitt Dead
Thomas H. Everitt, who had suffered for months the most terrible agonies from cancer of the stomach, passed away Thursday morning, July 31, surrounded by his sorrowing family, his last hours painless, thus ending a heroic fight with the Grim Reaper the victor.
He is survived by his widow, five sons and two daughters, Henry, Jesse, Herman, Fred L. and Carter Everitt, Mrs. Lydia Cranford and Mrs. James Carter. He also leaves three brothers, Charles, Oliver E. and W. R. Everitt; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Hosea; fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Everitt was 67 years of age and a native of Scott county, the oldest son of Capt. W.D. Everitt, deceased, and Mrs. Everitt, pioneers of the county. His mother, who is past 90 years of age, resides on the old home place, southwest of Vienna. He had been a leader in Republican politics for more than 40 years. He was elected sheriff in 1886 and again in 1890 he was successful in being elected sheriff. In 1896 he was elected trustee of Vienna township and served until 1902. He was three times elected county treasurer - in 1910, 1916 and 1918 - thus showing that he was highly regarded by his fellow citizens, since he was a Republican and the county strongly Democratic. He was generous to a fault, and many poor people were the beneficiaries of his kindness - otherwise he would have been a wealthy man. He was a man of positive convictions, self-assertive and outspoken, yet withal, there ran through his makeup a warmhearted impulse. He will be mourned by many friends and his death is a distinct loss to the community.
A short funeral service was held at the home Saturday at 10 a.m. after which the burial took place at the Everitt cemetery, southwest of Vienna, the funeral cortege stopping at the old homestead to allow the mother, who is very feeble, to view the body of her son.
The large attendance of sorrowing friends and the many beautiful floral offerings attested the high esteem in which he was held. The funeral was in charge of Scottsburg Lodge of Masons, of which he was a member.
