Death of Capt. Everitt
Capt. William D. Everitt died on Thursday of last week at his home southwest of Vienna, after an illness of several weeks due to a fall. His remains were interred Sunday at the Everitt family cemetery near his home. Members of the G. A. R. in charge of the funeral services.
William Davis Everitt was born in Scott County, Indiana, Feb. 8, 1833. Departed this life April 11, 1912, aged 79 years, 2 months and 3 days. He was united in marriage to Matilda Ellen Easum, April 14, 1852. To this union was born nine children - Mildred A., Thomas H., Martha F., James Edgar, William R., Charles H., Oliver E., Jesse F., and Bertha E. Of this number three have passed to the beyond - Mildred A., James Edgar and Jesse F. All the children reside in Scott county except Charles H. and Mrs. Bertha E. Hosea, who reside in Indianapolis.
In early life the deceased united with the United Brethren church and later transferred his membership to the M. E. Church at Vienna, where he was a consistent member until his death.
Capt. Everitt was a patriot of pronounced type. At the age of 29 he heard his country's call to arms and on July 15, 1862, he bade farewell to his family and marched away to bear the sufferings and hardships of war. He served three years as captain of Co. I., 81st Regiment Indiana Volunteers. He also served as second lieutenant, and on January 1, 1865, was commissioned major of the 81st Regiment.
At the close of the war he returned to his home in Scott county, where the remainder of his long and useful life was spent. He was a citizen of esteemed worth and was beloved by all. There is left to mourn his departure, the wife, four sons, daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Scottsburg, Ind, April 13. - Capt. William D. Everitt a civil war veteran of great prominence and member of the Eighty-first Indiana Volunteers, is dead at his home near Underwood, five miles south of this city. Capt. Everitt served three years as captain in charge of Company I. He also served commissions as second lieutenant and major, appointed by Governor Morton. During the war he was wounded in two different engagements and his war record is full of stirring examples of personal bravery.
He was an extensive land owner in this county and was well known politically. His burial will be in Everitt Cemetery, which is within 1,000 feet of the spot where he was born and raised. The day of burial, tomorrow, is the fifty-ninth anniversary of his wedding. A widow, three sons and two daughters survive. One son, T. H. Everitt, is now county treasurer. Capt. Everitt was well known throughout the state as he was always prominent in Grand Army affairs and encampments.
