Albert & Anna came to Milk River area in the spring of 1914. Anna brother Nels Pedersen came as well. Nels & Albert farmed together for 10 years. They were both born in Samso Denmark. Albert's parents are Singe & Nelsen Loft. After Albert & Anna moved to Chicago Albert worked for a cement plant bagging & loading cement. They lived in an upstairs apartment & were able to buy new furniture. They lived there about 1 & one half years when Nels Pedersen came to visit them. Nels new of a farmer by the name of Mr Stevens who had land in a place called Warner area. The land had been broken & it had new building on it. He offered them the farm at a reasonable rate & a share of the crop if there was one that year. Both men took his offer, they packed & shipped they furniture by train. Anna & Eddie returned to Iowa until there belonging arrived at Milk River Alberta which took 2 months. The 2 men were meet in Warner Alberta by Mr Stevens. They had $500.00 between the two of them & they bought 4 horses & feed for them & some machinery. It was a very dry spring of 1914. When Anna arrived in June the grass had not turned green. She noticed the endless number of Gopher holes & Gophers. The men later carried their plow shares to Warner on foot for sharpening. They crossed the Verdigris Coulee & on one trip discovered a patch of Saskatoon berries & arrived home with their hats full of berries. The rains arrived late & the it was almost fall before the grain sprouted that year. The 2 men like their neighbors travelled north with 2 teams & one wagon & found work with threshing crew. They stayed until it snowed in October. When the crops were poor those fist 2 years the 2 men always could find work off the farm. There was a good crop year in 1915 but Nels & Albert had very little crop in , 1916 they managed to seed most of there land. Prospects were good & wheat was worth $2.65 a bushel but in July they were completely hailed out & they had no crop insurance. There neighbors crop was not hailed out. They bought a mower & rake & tried to salvage what they could for feed for there cattle. The Loft's had three children born during this time Emma 1914, Arthur 1916 & finally Margaret 1920.
