Old William was doubtless born at Andrew's farm home just north of Funkstown, Md. in what was then Frederick Co. but since 1776 has been Washington Co Md. In 1780 he was evidently living in the area that remained Frederick Co., as his eldest son Jacob was born there, probable on the land near Foxville that Andrew had bought in the fall of 1779, about the time of Williams marriage. His second son, Christian, apparently was born in pa. about 1783/4 probably in Franklin Co. The 1790 censes finds him again in Frederick Co. Md. and the 1800 and 1810 censuses show him and his family in Washington Twp., Franklin Co. Pa. Census records list three sons born by 1790 (Jacob, Christian and probably Thomas).
About 1812 or 1813 Old William, then about 50, moved to Ohio either with or at about the same time as his two sons, Christian and Thomas. His eldest son, Jacob, remained in Franklin Co. On April 12, 1815, in Belmont Co. Ohio, old William married Susannah Lee, born 1798 or 1799 and thus still in her teens. Old William spelled his surname Harshman, but later he dropped the "r" and spelled it Hashman.
