John Arthur Hess, aged 63, of Smithsburg, Route One, died suddenly at 3:30 p.m. Monday while at work for the State and Washington County Road Department. he was operating a road grader between Leitersburg and Old Forge on the Clopper Road, and had gotten off the grader to grease the machine when he collapsed. He had not been feeling well for the past week. Death was due to a heart attack.

He was born at Rouzerville, son of John W. and Emma (Rouzer) Hess. He lived most of his life in the Ringgold vicinity, spending four years at Reid and living for the past six years at his present home. Prior to working with the road department for the past 21 years, he had farmed and also operated a threshing rig.

Mr. and Mrs. Hess celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary November 27. He was a member of the Rouzerville Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie A. (Harbaugh) Hess; also three brothers and two sisters, Joseph R. Hess, Zullinger, Pa.; Herman O/ Hess, Waynesboro, Pa., Route One; S. Allen Hess, Smithsburg, Route Two; Mrs. Nettie Wiles, Waynesboro, Pa., Route Four, and Mrs. Rhoda Deihl, Hagerstown, Route Five.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa., with the Rev. David N. Finney, Jr., and Rev. H.F. Coffelt officiating. Interment will be made in Harbaugh cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
