Death of a Prominent Educator.

Mrs. Sarah E. King-Ames died at Round Lake at 6:35 o'clock last night. She had been ill for more than four weeks with what developed into tuberculosis of the stomach, and proved at times so painful that opiates were freely administered. Her attending physician was Mrs. Dowdell-Wilson, who consulted with Dr. Liscomb of Mechanicville and Dr. Wilcox of Saratoga. Mrs. Ames was tall but of delicate physique. Only her extraordinary will power kept her alive so long. With her at the time of death was her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Coates, Miss Best and the nurses.

Mrs. Ames was of remarkable power and influence during her whole life. She was sixty-seven years old, and as long ago as 1854 began in the academy at Fort Plain her service as a school teacher. Then she served with her brother, Rev. Joseph E. King, as a preceptress at his Fort Edward academy, and finally, in 1868, she took the proprietorship of the academy for boys and girls at Mechanicville, which became one of the famous schools of its day. Its graduates are eminent in all the professions all around this section of the state, and even in the greater cities. One of the graduates was Colonel Ellsworth, the first martyr of the war of the rebellion, but before Mrs. Ames took charge. She was among the pioneers of the coeducation of the sexes, and walked hand in hand in the work for woman's advancement with Frances Willard and the coterie that centered about her thirty years ago.

Mrs. Ames was the daughter of a clergyman, married a clergyman, Rev. Bernice D. Ames, and has two brothers, Joseph E. and James M., both of whom are eminent in in the Methodist ministry. Joseph E. King is the principal of the Fort Edward collegiate institute and a trustee of Round Lake, and James M. is secretary of the league for the protection of American institutions. Her children are: Minnie, who is now Mrs. Coates of Newark, N. J., where her husband is connected with the railroads, and Charles Bernice, a master of Latin in the Rutgers preparatory school at New Brunswick, N. J.

There will be a prayer over the body at the cottage at Round Lake to-day, when the remains will be taken to Mechanicville for burial.

Mrs. Ames was a woman of culture. Mrs. Ames was compelled some time ago to give up teaching. She went to Newark, N. J., where she resided with her daughter, Mrs William H. Coates. For a number of years Mrs. Ames resided during the summer at Round Lake, where she owned a cottage. George King of Johnsonville is a brother of the deceased.
