Born Elsie Elizabeth Barrett on May 23, 1907, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., she and her family resettled in Kalamazoo, where she attended the St. Augustine school.
Sister Barrett entered the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Nazareth on Sept. 7, 1925. She received the name Sister Augustine in 1926, took her first vows Aug. 22, 1928, and pronounced her final vows Aug. 24, 1931.
Sister Barrett graduated with a bachelor's degree from Nazareth College before earning a master's degree in education from Marquette University.
She began teaching in Metro Detroit in the 1960s. For more than a decade she taught history, religion and English at St. Rita and St. David high schools in Detroit as well as the St. James school in Ferndale.
Renowned for her withering stares, sharp retorts and unwavering discipline, Sister Barrett endeared herself as a hard-lined educator who "loved being a teacher" and caring for her students, Sister O'Donnell said.
Sister Barrett later became principal of the St. Agnes school in Flint before working at Barbour Hall, a military school in Nazareth. She also served at St. Monica in Kalamazoo.
From 1978-84 she assisted in the alumni and records offices at Nazareth College.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Helen Barrett; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
