Sam Wilson Takes First Honors With Bass Over 11 Pounds; Paul Hale Gets 10 Pound Beauty

By LOIS HUNTER

Fishing luck for the past weekend, despite unfavorable weather conditions, was concluded as excellent today after hearing reports from several groups of anglers which may, or may not, be true.

First comes the good-luck tale offered by Fred Moreland, who with a guest, R. E. Watkins hailing from Detroit, Mich., journeyed yesterday afternoon to Lake Apopka, returning with a catch of 12 black bass, the largest said to weigh around five pounds.

Bob Lockhart and Paul Hale claimed honors for the best and largest catch when they told of catching 15 bass from the St. Johns the largest of which tipped the scales at 10 pounds and was landed by Hale.

Probably the largest single catch, however, was entered in Jimmy Hughes' fishing contest, an 11 1-2 pound bass caught yesterday in "a nearby lake" by Sam Wilson. This entry, according to Hughes, is by far the largest entered since the new contest opened October 1.

Non-Availability of Materials Holding up Law School Building, Other Construction at Stetson

A reminder that money raised by DeLand citizens during the summer of 1944 is waiting until the go ahead signal can be given for construction of the proposed building was voiced today by Dr. W. S. Allen, president of Stetson University. "The availability of building materials and labor," said Dr. Allen, "governs the date when construction will begin."

DeLand subscribers donated nearly $52,000 as part of the state-wide Stetson University Development Program inaugurated on May 18, 1944. One million dollars was set as the goal for the fund of which $300,000 is scheduled for building, $30,000 for improvements and $65,000 for a permanent endowment.

Women's Dormitory

Present construction includes the women's dormitory, and the enlargement of Stetson Hall. One hundred thousand dollars has been allotted for the latter project. Proposed improvements concern enlargement of the music building and the infirmary. Stetson Lodge has been purchased to meet the need for more student accommodations.

Dr. Allen said that the fund for the law school will open as scheduled, the new building must await an increase in the amount of building materials available.

Morton McDonald and Frank Hammer were co-chairmen of the DeLand Campaign, while Geo. A. Cooper of the American City Bureau directed the state-wide effort in 1944. DeLand residents passed the city goal of $50,000 by a 2,000 margin.

According to Dr. Allen, the drive still continues to meet the million dollar mark for the university.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:

Went to Cass Tech High School.

He quit dentistry after someone broke into his dentistry office in Vassar, Tuscola County, Michigan, USA and stole narcotics. He felt terribly bad about that, so he switched careers.

He bought the Stetson Lodge Hotel (named for the nearby Stetson University) at 620 North Woodland Boulevard, DeLand, Volusia County, Florida, USA in 1935. He sold the Stetson Lodge Hotel in 1946 to Stetson University. He invested in the Stetson Lodge Hotel because he thought Florida's interior would develop before the oceanfront property.

He never joined military service (World War I) because his wife threatened to shot him in the leg if he did.
