Bettie Helen Askin Schafer, 84, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 11, 2013. Born July 9, 1928, in Washington Township, to the late Wilbert F. "Bert" and Flora Mae Bish Askin, she was a 1946 graduate of New Kensington High School. She was employed by Murphy Five and Ten and later was a long time sales clerk for Bearer Electric, both of New Kensington. She was a member of Jane's United Methodist Church of Creighton, East Deer, and she enjoyed writing poetry, and held copyrights for several poems and plays in the Library of Congress. Bettie is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Ralph James Schafer; her son, Gregory Todd (Michelle L. Fortuna) Schafer, of New Kensington; and her beloved grandsons, Gordon James Schafer, Jakob Glen Schafer and Calvin Joseph Schafer. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie Valjean O'Leary, who died in 2002; a son, Glen Howard Schafer, who died in infancy in 1952; and siblings, Dorothy Gardner, Grace Swonger, Wilbert Askin and Clifford Askin. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday by her pastor, the Rev.
