Wilbert J. Askin, 85, of Lower Burrell died Monday (Aug. 23, 2004) in Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison.

Born Dec. 14, 1918, in New Kensington, he lived in New Kensington before moving to Lower Burrell in 1957.

He was a 1937 graduate of New Kensington High School.

Mr. Askin was a sheet metal worker for Local 12 Sheetworkers, Harmar, for 40 years before retiring in 1980. He also worked for the Meyer-Johnston Company, formerly in Arnold, for many years.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the New Kensington Tyrian Masonic Lodge, both in Lower Burrell.

Mr. Askin enjoyed bowling, baseball, and playing horseshoes.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Esther M. Evans Askin; a son, Daniel J. (Colleen M. Cuglietta-Askin) Askin of Lower Burrell; and a sister, Betty (James) Schafer of New Kensington.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Nigel and Benjamin Askin, and Chad, Derek and Kara Vincent; and a son-in-law, Dennis Vincent.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy F. Vincent; his parents, Wilbert Francis and Flora Mae Bish Askin; a brother, Lester "Cliff" Askin; and two sisters, Dorothy Gardner and Grace Swonger.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Rd., New Kensington, where a service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. In the absence of his pastor, the Rev. Warren Jones, Mr. Askin's nephew, the Rev. James N. Latta, pastor of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Elwood City, will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
