Beginning his teaching career in 1894, he taught at all of the little red schoolhouses in the Brownsville area, including those at Weverton, Cushens, Yarrowsburg, Mt. Briar and Chestnut Grove. Mr. Younkins often reminisced about his habit of always walking to and from his teaching duties. Friends estimated that he had walked at least 20,000 miles in this manner. For many years he was a partner in the operation of a store at Yarrowsburg. After retiring from the teaching profession, he ran a store at Brownsville until about one year ago.
He was born at Yarrowsburg, son of the late Oliver M.C. and Elizabeth Kaetzel Younkins. He was a lay minister of the Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Anders; sons, Edgar L., Gapland; Cameron, W., Hagerstown; Elwood R., Brownsville; John G., Brownsville; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild; sisters, Mrs. Annie Waters, Brownsville; Mrs. Arthur Nokes, Yarrowsburg; Mrs. Fay Stone, Baltimore; Mrs. Luther Gordon, Gapland; brothers, J.C. Younkins, Yarrowsburg; Orville B., Knoxville; Maltby C., Yarrowsburg; half-sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Tritpoe, Knoxville; Mrs. John Harrison, Brownsville; Mrs. Ruth Bierley, Frederick.
Funeral services Wednesday afternoon at 2 from the Church of the Brethren in Brownsville with Rev. Newton Poling, assisted by Rev. John Bowlus, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body may be viewed at the Bast funeral home in Boonsboro until Wednesday noon and at the church from 1 o'clock until time of the service.
