Annie Maude Lawless, 94, of Fieldale, died Thursday, December 22, 2011, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, Virginia.

She was born, September 21, 1917 in Patrick County, Va. in the village of Meadows of Dan and spent her childhood with her four brothers and sisters in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her father, Elmer Cassell, was a mail carrier and her mother, Ella Blancett Cassell, was a housewife. The family moved to Fieldale when she was 7 years old. Her first memory of Fieldale was the excitement of seeing that she would be able to play outside at night because the town had lights.

She attended Fieldale Elementary School, but went to work at Fieldcrest Mills when she was just 14. She worked 10 hours a day until a child labor law passed and the mill laid her off until she turned 16. In the intervening year she met and fell in love with Letcher Lawless who lived on Oak Level Road and worked for Stanleytown Furniture Company. It was love at first sight and they were married sitting in a car in front of a candy store during Letcher’s lunch break. She was 15 and he was 20.

Annie Maude and Letcher set up housekeeping in Fieldale and raised three children in a company house on South Chestnut Street. By this time Letcher was a Fieldcrest employee, too. Annie Maude worked for Fieldcrest for forty-eight years as a spinner, spooler and winder until she retired from the mill on September 1, 1979 at age 62.

Annie Maude’s life was filled with good works, love of family and commitment to her church home, Old Dan River Primitive Baptist Church on the Blue Ridge Mountains.

As age 94, Annie left this earth to join those who have preceded her to heaven. They include her mother, Ella; father, Elmer; sister, Rachel Fulcher; brothers, Edgar, Leeland and Murray Cassell. Also awaiting her arrival in heaven are her beloved husband, Letcher; her son, Danny, who died in a car accident at the tender age of 16, and her son-in-law, Paul Dean Nichols, whom she treasured.

She leaves behind to celebrate her wonderful life her daughter, Ramona Nichols; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Russell Gregory and three grandchildren, Nicky Nichols, Eric Gregory and Dannie Allen and 11 great grandchildren.

May God be praised by all who knew her and loved this generous, gentle and beautiful lady. We invite you to join us at her service Saturday, December 24, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Elder Tim McGrady and Elder Donnie Conner . Burial will follow in the Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11:00 AM on Saturday at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. The family welcomes all who attended her service to join them at her home, 1600 Valley Drive in Fieldale for a time of fellowship following the burial.
