VERNA E. BARTEL
Verena E. Bartel, age 91, a resident of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, died early on Sunday morning, Aug. 9, 2009, at Shady Lane.
Verena was born Feb. 24, 1918, in St. Nazianz, a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Rose (Bushman) Christel. She was a graduate of Kiel High School, with the class of 1936.
Verena married Peter R. Bartel in June 1940, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz.
She worked for a short time as a clerk at the Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz, and in 1944 the couple moved to Two Creeks, where they operated a dairy farm until 1964. During this time, Verena also assisted her husband Peter, who served as the town of Two Creeks treasurer.
Verena also worked as credit manager for Sears in Manitowoc for many years, until retiring in 1983. The couple was then living in the Shoto area (1964-1997). In 1997, Verena moved to Manitowoc, and currently resided at Shady Lane Home for the past 18 months.
She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mishicot for most of her adult life. Verena loved to dance (met Peter while at a dance). The couple continued to enjoy dancing with many of their friends over the years. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening, and especially enjoyed quilting. She was a member of the Manitowoc County Homemakers, and several card clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter; sister, Melda Christel; brother, Eugene Christel; and a great granddaughter, Alexandria Bennett.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum, Hwy. 310, Manitowoc. The Rev. William G. O'Brien will officiate at the service, with entombment to follow in Knollwood Mausoleum. The family will greet relatives and friends at Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum, from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday. Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506 18th St. Two Rivers, is assisting the Bartel family with funeral arrangements.
